President Donald Trump has actively participated in several election contests, assisting loyalists and sidelining opponents. This involvement is expected to continue, especially against Republicans criticizing the MAGA movement as the midterm elections approach.
Primary Elections and Trump’s Influence
Recently, Trump’s influence was evident in the primary loss of Republican Representative Thomas Massie to Ed Gallrein in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District. The campaign saw a public feud between Trump and Massie, with Trump disparaging Massie as the “worst congressman in the Republican Party.” Massie, known for clashing with Trump on issues such as foreign policy, had aligned himself against Trump-backed priorities.
Shortly before that, GOP Senator Bill Cassidy lost in a Republican primary in Louisiana. Julia Letlow, supported by Trump, won the chance to advance. Cassidy had previously voted to convict Trump after his impeachment related to the January 6 Capitol riot.
Potential MAGA Targets Ahead
Following Massie’s defeat, conservative voices speculate about future MAGA targets. On Tuesday, activist Laura Loomer warned Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, saying, “you’re next.”
Rand Paul
Rand Paul is viewed as a potential target due to his political alignment with Massie and his history of opposing Trump on key issues. Paul, known for his libertarian stance, has consistently opposed Trump’s foreign policy and spending measures. He criticized Trump’s use of executive powers, including on tariffs and emergency authorities, noting that these actions could exceed constitutional limits. In an August 2025 podcast, Paul said the Trump administration would be debated for its executive power reach. Although this positions him at odds with the MAGA base, Paul’s strong national profile and 2028 reelection timeline shield him from immediate threats.
Lauren Boebert
Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican Representative, once dubbed a “MAGA warrior” by Trump, supported Massie during his primary campaign. Despite her endorsement, Boebert maintained her support for Trump, stating both men fight for America’s future. Trump, however, publicly considered supporting a primary challenger against her. Boebert’s quick response to Trump’s critique reaffirmed her commitment to MAGA values. Colorado’s primary for her seat is scheduled for June 30, 2026, and she currently runs unopposed.
Victoria Spartz
Victoria Spartz, a Republican from Indiana, stood by Massie amid his primary challenges, citing his support for women’s rights. Although she hasn’t faced direct criticism from Trump, her association with Massie during Trump’s opposition could draw attention from MAGA supporters. Having already secured a primary win on May 5, she advanced to the general election, protecting her from immediate threats.
John Thune
Senate Majority Leader John Thune frequently clashed with Trump on policy and strategy. His refusal to scrap the filibuster during debates on Trump’s SAVE America Act emphasized his willingness to challenge Trump when necessary. Although Thune maintains a working relationship with Trump, his opposition to various legislative efforts keeps him at odds with some MAGA supporters. Thune is not up for reelection until a future cycle, limiting immediate political risks.
