Some fans expressed their disapproval by booing her during pregame introductions.
Clark commented on the audience’s reaction to White after the Fever defeated the Liberty 106-92. She expressed disappointment, stating, “I hated that our fans booed her before the game. That made me a little sick, to be honest. We’re going to ride for her, and we’re always going to have her back. That’s never going to tear our locker room apart.” The boos came after White’s intense pregame speech about Indiana’s Sophie Cunningham and a hard foul she received from Chicago’s DiJonai Carrington over the weekend, which led to increasing tension in the league.
During her post-game comments, White revealed she did not see replays of the incident that left Cunningham with a bloody mouth and Carrington ejected. “Was it egregious? Absolutely,” she remarked. “When you have a chance to watch that over and over and over on replay, you can see that. I didn’t have that in real time.”
White responded forcefully to suggestions of lacking support for her players and addressed what she perceives as misleading narratives from the “online community.” She stated, “The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided.” Concluding her remarks, she said, “Love will win, grace will win. Humility will win, and kindness will win. I stand by them, I will always stand by them. Everybody else can go to hell.”
Although White couldn’t view replays during the game against the Chicago Sky on August 8, her post-game comments seemed to defend Carrington. “Yeah, I mean, look, it was a hard foul. I don’t think that DiJonai intentionally came out to get her across the neck like she did. But it did happen, and I thought it was the right call,” she commented. She acknowledged the intensity of Carrington’s play but clarified that the foul wasn’t intentional aimed at the neck.
In a matter of days, White’s comments and actions have drawn attention. She hesitated to fully support Cunningham post-foul, altered her stance on Carrington’s action, and told critics to “go to hell.” The resulting frustration among Fever fans regarding White is understandable.
