A lesser-known project marking the semiquincentennial currently occupies a significant location in the heart of Washington, D.C.
Recently unveiled at Freedom Plaza, situated on Pennsylvania Avenue, a corridor linking the White House to the U.S. Capitol, stands a statue of Jude Hall. Hall was a Black soldier who served in the Revolutionary War and is featured as part of the installation called “Spirit of ’76 at Freedom Plaza.”
Freedom Plaza, a lively urban space, provides a unique opportunity to explore Washington, D.C.’s intricate design. The plaza includes a large-scale representation of the original “L’Enfant Plan” for Washington, embedded into its pavement. This design immerses visitors in the city’s thoughtful layout, showcasing the interplay between grand ceremonial streets and the domestic street grid, mirroring the constitutional dynamics between federal and local jurisdictions.
