Brazil’s hope for a World Cup victory ended as Erling Haaland and Norway delivered a strong performance in the Round of 16. The game remained scoreless into the second half, but Haaland broke the deadlock with a header at the 79th minute, securing a 1-0 lead for Norway.
The Manchester City forward, standing at 6-foot-5, added another goal at the 90th minute. This extended Norway’s advantage to 2-0, leaving Brazil searching for a response. Neymar, who came on as a substitute in the second half, managed to score a last-minute penalty. However, it was too late to prevent Brazil’s exit, marking an end to Neymar’s World Cup career.
“I tried. It started here at MetLife Stadium and I finished here. It is now over,” Neymar mentioned post-game, announcing his international retirement.
Neymar debuted internationally at MetLife Stadium against the United States Men’s National Team in 2010, scoring in a 2-0 victory for Brazil. The 2026 World Cup was Neymar’s fourth appearance following participations in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Throughout his World Cup career, he played in 15 matches, recorded 1,224 minutes, scored nine goals, and assisted four others. In 2014, Neymar earned the Bronze Boot while leading Brazil to the semifinals, followed by quarterfinal appearances in 2018 and 2022.
Currently playing for Santos in Brazil Serie A, Neymar has logged four goals and two assists in eight starts this season. Brazil, having last won the World Cup in 2002, will now wait another four years to compete for the title again.
Norway, with Haaland and his team looking strong, will face off against the winner of the Mexico vs. England match. The quarterfinal clash is scheduled for Saturday, July 11.
