A 16-year-old girl has been charged criminally after an incident where she ran onto the field and tackled a middle school football player. The event, captured in a viral video, occurred during a game between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School in Tennessee.
The confrontation took place on Tuesday night at Franklin County High School, South’s home field. After South scored a touchdown, officials threw penalty flags for extracurricular activity behind the play.
At this moment, the girl rushed onto the field and knocked down a South player. When the player stood up, she pushed him back to the ground. Coaches and players intervened to separate her from the player.
“A fan ran onto the field and tackled a player,” stated the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. “The referees immediately ended the game and cleared the field. The stadium was emptied without further incident, and no one was injured.”
The 16-year-old suspect was released to her parents and charged with assault and disorderly conduct. She is permanently banned from all Franklin County School System properties and prohibited from attending any Cornersville games for a year.
The game, which was in the third quarter at the time of the incident, concluded with South awarded a 35-0 victory.
