On Wednesday, President Donald Trump personally led a tour of the White House lawn to highlight the ongoing construction projects there. He showcased the helipad being built, autographing a section and emphasizing his enthusiasm for the new ballroom under construction. He expressed confidence that the work would impress visiting foreign leaders, such as China’s President Xi Jinping, who is expected to visit next month.
Trump described the strength and quality of the granite being used on the helipad, noting its capacity to endure 35,000 pounds per square inch of pressure. “This is stone that, even with continuous hammering, wouldn’t show a mark,” he asserted, stressing the material’s durability.
The president pointed out that he has replaced the walkway and part of the asphalt driveway with white granite. In his words, “Asphalt is not fitting for a significant place like the White House.” He believes that the granite will last longer and provide greater support compared to concrete.
Trump’s Passion for Building Projects
Trump often likens his presidency to his past in real estate development. He enjoys managing building projects at the White House and uses them as a platform to showcase his achievements. Last year, he observed a construction site from the roof, and earlier this summer, he led reporters on a tour of the ballroom construction area.
These projects remain important to Trump, despite ongoing political challenges and low approval ratings. He called the construction “very exciting,” emphasizing its long-lasting impact. Trump notes that even after his tenure ends, the significance of these projects will endure.
Ballroom Construction and Security
Trump maintains that the $400 million ballroom will enhance White House security by incorporating anti-drone technology and other features. Though the administration failed to secure $1 billion in congressional funding for military upgrades, Trump predicts the Supreme Court will eventually allow construction to continue regardless.
Trump also admires Scotts-Miracle Gro, a company that donated $1 million for White House lawn repairs. He acknowledged its support amidst the helipad construction and past events that had damaged the grass.
In a particular moment during the tour, Trump signed a granite stone intended for the helipad’s presidential seal. The stone, marked as “Donald Trump 45-47 president,” bears an eagle shape. Trump urged members of the press to witness the signing, calling it “a different kind of news conference.” Workers who signed the stone received praise for their efforts.
Wednesday’s presentation also confirmed delays in the helipad project to refine its surface. With assurances of the granite’s “million-year life,” Trump contrasted this project with the issues faced during the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s Reflecting Pool.
“Nature is stronger than what humans can create,” said Trump, reflecting on the granite’s durability.
