Switzerland Defeats Canada, Tops World Cup Group B

In Vancouver, British Columbia, Switzerland hindered Canada’s World Cup celebrations. Goals from Rubén Vargas and Johan Manzambi led Switzerland to a 2-1 win over Canada, securing the top position in Group B. This victory allows Switzerland a week’s rest before facing a third-place finisher on July 2 in Vancouver.

Swiss coach Murat Yakin expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “I believe we’ve earned our current standing. We will soon learn our next opponent, and we aim to remain prepared and focused.”

Canada fell to second place and advances to the knockout round, a first in their history. The team hoped to play the round of 32 on home soil, but will now travel to Inglewood, California, to face the second-place team from Group A.

Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch commented, “While we wanted to stay in Vancouver, we still have a tremendous chance to inspire the nation, despite playing from Los Angeles.”

After scoring twice off the bench in Switzerland’s 4-1 triumph over Bosnia-Herzegovina, Johan Manzambi, only 20, began the match against Canada, proving to be a young revelation in the tournament. Vargas initiated the scoring for Switzerland shortly after halftime with a shot that bypassed Canada’s goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau.

In the 57th minute, Breel Embolo assisted Manzambi, whose strike furthered Switzerland’s lead to 2-0, silencing the enthusiastic Canadian fans, among them Prime Minister Mark Carney and CONCACAF President Victor Montagliani.

Canada attempted a comeback with Promise David scoring in the 76th minute, yet they failed to equalize. Despite opportunities, Canada’s second goal remained elusive.

Swiss captain Granit Xhaka had a chance to score in the first half, but a 37th-minute free kick went astray. Canada’s Ali Ahmed also made a commendable attempt, with his 42nd-minute shot blocked by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Previously, Canada secured a historic 6-0 win over Qatar, setting the stage for potential advancement. However, the victory came at a cost with Ismaël Koné leaving due to a broken leg.

Switzerland’s World Cup campaign began with a 1-1 draw against Qatar, followed by a decisive win over Bosnia, affirming their status as Group B favorites. They have reached the World Cup round of 16 in previous editions.

Yakin remarked that many teams needed time to adjust to the tournament, noting, “Some big teams excelled against smaller ones. We’ve now found our rhythm in this tournament, and I’m content with our current gameplay.”

In their third World Cup appearance, Canada faced Bosnia initially, ending with a 2-2 draw. Coach Marsch credited the team for persevering amid challenges, saying, “We’ve encountered many setbacks and yet performed exceptionally, even against Qatar. The tight margins ultimately influenced the group outcome.”

Elsewhere in Group B, Bosnia defeated Qatar 3-1, keeping the possibility open for advancement, while Qatar has been eliminated from the World Cup.
