Qatar player Assim Madibo received a five-match suspension on Wednesday following a tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné at the World Cup. The incident occurred during Canada’s 6-0 win against Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday, where Madibo earned a straight red card for his actions.
The FIFA disciplinary committee categorized the tackle as serious foul play. The decision is open for appeal. This incident cast a shadow over Canada’s first World Cup victory, as Koné was stretchered off the field and underwent surgery for his broken tibia and fibula in his left leg.
The tackle took place in the 51st minute when Koné was tackled from behind. Players nearby immediately recognized the severity of the injury as Koné lay on the ground, holding his leg in pain. Madibo, clearly distressed by the outcome, apologized to Koné in person after the match. Koné later expressed gratitude on Instagram for the support he received.
The Qatar national team has not yet responded to a request for comment from The Associated Press.
While significant, Madibo’s ban is not FIFA’s longest at a World Cup. In 2014, Uruguay’s Luis Suarez received a nine-match suspension and a four-month ban from soccer-related activities for biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini. Similarly, in 1994, Italy’s Mauro Tassotti was suspended for eight games after an elbow incident involving Spain’s Luis Enrique.
