Landmark Lakers Sale Announced
Bob Iger, well-known for his leadership at Disney, and Joshua Kushner, a venture capitalist and the sibling of Jared Kushner, have reached an agreement to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers. The transaction occurs less than two years after the Lakers experienced an ownership change, marking yet another phase in the team’s history.
According to reports, Iger and Kushner will pay $12.5 billion to acquire the Lakers from Mark Walter’s ownership group. This deal is valued at $2.5 billion more than what Walter paid only a year earlier. Walter still has no plans to sell his stake in the Dodgers.
Mark Walter’s Recent Ownership
In a significant move last year, Mark Walter made headlines when he acquired the Lakers for a groundbreaking $10 billion. His acquisition was part of a series of transactions involving his interests in major sports franchises. As the main figure in a federal investigation surrounding financial dealings like related-party transactions, Walter’s business choices continue to be scrutinized.
Despite selling the Lakers, Walter confirmed he intends to maintain ownership of the Dodgers. People closely connected to the matter have indicated no plans for further sales.
The Buss Family Legacy
The Lakers have long been recognized as one of the most iconic franchises in the NBA. Dr. Jerry Buss originally bought the team in 1979, establishing a family-run business. His daughter, Jeanie Buss, retained control after his passing, serving as the team’s governor.
The Buss family’s influence contributed significantly to the Lakers’ brand and valuation, culminating in the sale to Walter. As part of the ownership transition, Jeanie Buss will remain the team’s governor for at least five more years, as specified by the NBA’s approval.
The recent agreement to sell the Lakers illustrates the ever-changing dynamics of sports franchise ownership, with Iger and Kushner preparing to take the reins of this legendary team.
Involvement in Angel City FC
Beyond basketball, Bob Iger and his wife, Willow Bay, are also making moves in women’s soccer. They have announced an arrangement to join as controlling owners of Angel City FC, following a $50 million investment to enhance the club’s financial stability.
This venture in the National Women’s Soccer League highlights Iger and Bay’s commitment to fostering growth and addressing losses within the sports industry. The acquisition remains subject to league approval, underscoring Iger’s expanding influence in the realm of sports ownership.
