Texas A&M’s journey to the College Football Playoff seemed a bit early for head coach Mike Elko during his second year.
The Aggies claimed their top victory with a 41-40 nail-biter at Notre Dame during Week 2. Though Elko guided the team to an undefeated regular season finale, the schedule in 2025 was significantly easier than what they face next season.
“This season must focus on learning how to close out,” Elko says.
Despite beating Notre Dame, Texas A&M fell to Texas 27-17 in Austin on November 28. They also lost to Miami 10-3 in the CFP’s opening round.
Quarterback Marcel Reed, back for his second full season, could prepare the Aggies for a better CFP run. Here, we highlight three critical games for Texas A&M.
Texas A&M vs LSU (Sept. 26)
This spring, quarterback Marcel Reed boldly stated he never loses to LSU. Last season in Baton Rouge, Texas A&M dominated the Tigers 49-25, ending Brian Kelly’s stint with LSU.
Now, under new head coach Lane Kiffin, LSU presents a revamped challenge. Texas A&M’s new offensive line transfers must face LSU’s rebuilt defense.
Texas A&M vs Alabama (Oct. 24)
Alabama’s CFP spot is uncertain following quarterback Ty Simpson’s departure and major losses in their front seven.
Their success largely depends on the performance of emerging quarterbacks Keelon Russell or Austin Mack. Ranked or not, playing in Tuscaloosa remains a formidable test for the Aggies.
Texas vs Texas A&M (Nov. 27)
After a competitive game at Oklahoma, Texas A&M concludes their regular season against rivals Texas. Last year, the Longhorns upset the Aggies.
This season sees Texas with an improved lineup, demanding a strong performance from Texas A&M. Success here can heavily influence Elko’s impact on the CFP selection committee.
