The Tennessee Titans are dealing with unexpected news about linebacker Cedric Gray. Gray has entered the NFL’s concussion protocol following a UTV accident over the weekend in Tennessee, according to a team statement. The accident led to a concussion and some minor injuries.
The Titans expressed optimism about Gray’s recovery, stating, “We look forward to Cedric returning to the field soon and in full health when he clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.” However, with the season opening against the New York Jets on Sunday, head coach Robert Saleh’s former team, Gray’s participation in Week 1 is doubtful. Players must pass several phases of the NFL’s return-to-participation program before being allowed back on the field.
Gray’s situation bears watching in the coming days. The linebacker, a 2024 fourth-round pick, is entering his third season with the Titans. He excelled last year, recording 164 total tackles, ranking fourth in the NFL, along with seven tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, four pass breakups, two fumble recoveries, and a sack in 16 games. His performance earned him a PFF grade of 78.9, placing seventh among 88 qualified linebackers, and a 92.7 run defense grade, ranking second.
Gray was set to continue his Pro Bowl-caliber trajectory this season, but now the Titans must proceed without him at least temporarily. This situation adds pressure to veteran Cody Barton, third-year player James Williams Sr., and rookie Anthony Hill Jr., a second-round pick, to fill Gray’s role effectively.
