A 15-year-old has been arrested in connection with a shooting that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old during a high school football game in Bakersfield, California. The shooting took place at Independence High School as it hosted Centennial High School for its season opener. According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Friday.
Police confirmed that neither the suspect nor the victim were students at Independence High School. While the shooting was not directly linked to the football game, it occurred outside the chain-link barrier surrounding the field and track but within the exterior fence of the football stadium.
Officers discovered the 17-year-old victim with gunshot wounds. He was transported to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released the victim’s name publicly.
On Saturday, police announced the arrest of the 15-year-old suspect on charges of murder, firearm-related offenses, and participating in a criminal street gang. Investigators revealed that the suspect and victim were acquainted, and this was not a random act of violence.
Before the shooting, a fight had broken out involving several individuals. Gunfire erupted during the game, causing panic among players and spectators, and leading to the game’s cancellation. The weapon used in the shooting hasn’t been recovered, and investigators believe no additional suspects are involved.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Kern High School District officers, Bakersfield Police, and Kern County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the reports of gunfire. “Our deepest sympathies remain with the family of the 17-year-old,” said the Bakersfield Police Department. They acknowledged the profound impact on the families of both the victim and the suspect.
Kern High School District Superintendent Dr. Michael Zulfa stated that Independence High School staff and district police acted swiftly to ensure the safety of students and spectators. The district is cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues and will offer counseling and support to all affected.
The night, meant to inaugurate the new school year with school spirit and celebration, was marred by violence, deeply affecting the community, Dr. Zulfa added.
The investigation is ongoing, with no further details immediately available from the Kern County District Attorney’s Office. Fox News Digital’s Brittany Miller, a breaking news writer and Syracuse University graduate, contributed to this report.
