Chicago Cubs’ Ian Happ Faces Challenges Against Left-Handed Pitchers

Chicago Cubs outfielder Ian Happ is encountering challenges familiar to many switch-hitters when facing left-handed pitchers. On Saturday, the Cubs lineup against Seattle Mariners’ debutant left-hander Cade Anderson featured Kevin Alcántara starting in left field, Tyrone Taylor in right, and Seiya Suzuki as the designated hitter. Happ’s difficulties against lefties have led manager Craig Counsell to seek alternatives.

Batting Struggles

Happ’s season performance against left-handed pitchers has been tough. His statistics reveal a batting average of .229, an on-base percentage of .292, an OPS of .521, and a 34.8% strikeout rate over 132 plate appearances from the right side this season.

Happ acknowledged the challenges, saying, “Last year, even without the desired results, the expecteds were favorable, which offered reassurance. Although the initial right-handed at-bats were promising, difficulties have persisted throughout the season due to opponents’ execution.” Changes in the Cubs’ roster, including acquiring Taylor and recalling Alcántara, have prompted Counsell to limit Happ’s opportunities against left-handed starters.

Adapting to Limited Opportunities

Happ expressed the difficulty of making adjustments with inconsistent at-bats. “The switch-hitting challenge lies in the lack of consistency. Tweaks happen during limited opportunities; real understanding of effectiveness is constrained without sufficient reps.” Pitchers have increasingly targeted Happ with offspeed pitches, aware of his vulnerability to them.

Statistically, his woes involve a .072 wOBA and 54% whiff rate against changeups, and wOBA figures of .239 for both curveballs and sliders with whiff rates of 58.8% and 36.6%, respectively. Fastballs remain his strength, suggested by a higher slugging percentage. Recognizing pitch patterns, Happ aims for disciplined approaches early in counts that prevent falling behind.

Impact in High-Leverage Situations

Despite offensive struggles, Happ has excelled in crucial, late-game moments, evident from his 1.048 OPS in such scenarios this year. After his pivotal home run on Friday, Happ attributes success to preparation and adaptability. “Remaining disciplined to desired pitches is crucial. Late-game relievers deploy their best arsenal, demanding focus on favorable counts,” Happ explained.

Manager Counsell sees the value of increased right-handed opportunities for Happ, acknowledging the difficult balance between performance and playing time.
