Shohei Ohtani’s Return to Pitching
Shohei Ohtani made substantial progress in his return to two-way action on Saturday. The Dodgers star threw a live batting practice session, tossing 30 pitches to catcher Will Smith, who is also in recovery. His last game pitch was on July 3, and prior to this, he had been engaging in bullpen sessions.
“I didn’t have a check-in with Shohei, but everything from the coaches [is] really positive.” – Dodgers manager Dave Roberts
Before a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, manager Dave Roberts shared positive feedback from coaching staff about Ohtani’s day. Ohtani seemed at ease, even exchanging laughs with Smith after a successful pitch, inducing an infield pop-up. Another live session may precede his return to full rotation duties.
Roberts indicated that Ohtani’s knee problems, which paused his pitching, have resolved. Adjustments in his mechanics have alleviated pressure from his knee.
“That’s why this [is] live and the lives are good,” Roberts stated, emphasizing the importance of facing live hitters.
Andy Pages Injury Update
Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages might need surgery for his fractured left hand, injured by a 100-mph sinker from pitcher Bubba Chandler. Whether surgery occurs, Pages is expected to be out for approximately four weeks.
“I think they’re probably leaning towards some type of surgery,” Roberts said, confirming the timeline remains unchanged.
Roberts assured Pages in the X-ray room that the season isn’t over, expecting him back at full health.
Tyler Glasnow and Other Player Updates
Tyler Glasnow, sidelined since May 6, is set to start Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves without restrictions. Justin Wrobleski, managing forearm inflammation, will enter the bullpen upon return from the injured list, contributing as a two-to-three-inning pitcher.
Regarding Edwin Díaz, who is overcoming neck inflammation, Roberts plans less-stressful situations to rebuild confidence before resuming his closing role.
“It’s more of getting him back healthy, and then putting him in some softer landing situations to get the confidence, to get the feel, and the trust of executing pitches [and] getting major league hitters out,” Roberts mentioned.
Will Smith, after practice with Ohtani, continues improving in his rehab, and Roberts appreciates seeing both players compete.
