Suspension of Academic at Ghent University Amid Controversy

Ghent University in Belgium has suspended Nathan Cofnas, a postdoctoral researcher, following allegations and public statements concerning Jason Arday, a former Cambridge professor. The suspension serves as a precautionary step while the university investigates the matter.

Cofnas, previously affiliated with Cambridge, has sparked controversy with his claims that Black people are genetically predisposed to lower intelligence than white people. This issue intensified when Cofnas accused Dr. Arday of plagiarism in his doctoral dissertation through a newsletter. The accusation led to significant public attention and claims of a fabricated life story by Dr. Arday.

Dr. Arday, who was Black, resigned from his Cambridge position earlier this month. He was found dead shortly after, raising concerns over a stressful public examination of his personal and professional life. Ghent University emphasized the importance of academic freedom paired with responsibility, highlighting that it must protect the rights of others.

Dr. Cofnas confirmed his suspension, suggesting it was politically motivated. The university did not comment on this claim. In response to the plagiarism allegations, Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Dr. Arday his Ph.D., decided against withdrawing his degree.

The New York Times discovered that Cambridge overlooked warnings regarding Dr. Arday’s work and history. In a resignation letter dated August 5, Dr. Arday expressed distress over constant public scrutiny. His family attributed his death to a damaging misinformation campaign.
