Qatar Accuses Iran of Tanker Attack in Strategic Waterway

Qatar has accused Iran of attacking a Qatari-flagged liquefied natural gas tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of maritime navigation and adherence to international law.

“We demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran immediately cease all practices that undermine regional security or threaten the safety of international maritime navigation, and refrain from endangering global energy supplies and the resources of the countries of the region in pursuit of narrow interests,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari stated on social media. “We hold it fully legally responsible for this attack and for any resulting damages and consequences,” he added.

The attack occurred during ceremonies for the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who died in an airstrike in February. Iran has not claimed responsibility for the attack on the tanker.

The U.K. Maritime Trade Operations, linked to the British Royal Navy, reported that a tanker was hit by a projectile, causing a fire while traveling off the coast of Oman. The type of projectile was not specified. Iranian state media reported the attack on a Qatari vessel after it ignored warnings.

Iran has claimed authority over the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage for approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas. Tensions have led to clashes between Iranian and U.S. forces, each accusing the other of breaking a tenuous ceasefire.

U.S. Response and Further Developments

The U.S. military launched several strikes against Iranian targets in retaliation for attacks on commercial vessels in the area. U.S. Central Command reported the aim is to impose costs for targeting civilian-operated commercial ships in the strait.

In other international developments, the U.S. State Department expressed concern over China’s test launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine in the Pacific Ocean, emphasizing efforts to contain nuclear proliferation.
