Democrats Seek New Senate Nominee as Platner Faces Allegations

Democrats, both in Maine and across the nation, are urgently seeking a new Senate nominee for Maine’s crucial race. This follows the expectation that Graham Platner will withdraw his candidacy due to a rape allegation causing his leading supporters to distance themselves.

If Platner withdraws by the upcoming Monday deadline, Democrats must act swiftly. Maine state law allows the party just over two weeks, until July 27, to nominate a replacement. While the law doesn’t specify how this should occur, the options under discussion include holding a convention or a statewide caucus in late July.

The selection of a new candidate is politically challenging, with moderates, progressives, and Platner vying for influence in the decision-making process. Additionally, Democrats are more cautious about vetting potential nominees after the difficult situation with Platner. Any new nominee will need to quickly establish their campaign and gather funds to challenge Senator Susan Collins, a Republican who has consistently dashed Democrats’ attempts to claim her seat.

Potential Candidates

Several names are being considered, both as likely replacements and as longshots. A highlighted candidate is Troy Jackson, a progressive figure who presided over Maine’s State Senate from 2018 to 2024. Jackson aligns with Platner’s political views, and Platner previously endorsed him as a top choice for governor before Jackson finished third in the Democratic primary in June. Jackson, a logger from Aroostook County in northern Maine, has now formed an exploratory committee indicating his interest in the Senate race.
