Mixed Reactions to U.S. Soccer Team’s Loss Post-Trump Intervention

On Monday night, the United States men’s soccer team faced a disappointing 4-1 loss to Belgium in the World Cup. This defeat occurred after President Donald Trump reportedly asked FIFA to review a red card given to key player Folarin Balogun. Balogun had been penalized in a match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, resulting in a suspension. On Sunday, FIFA announced that Balogun’s punishment would be lifted, although FIFA clarified that Trump’s call did not influence the decision.

Online reactions to the U.S. loss varied, with many opponents of Trump expressing satisfaction. Several social media users on platforms such as Bluesky discussed the perceived impact of Trump’s intervention. One user remarked, “I don’t follow soccer, but I hear the men’s US team lost to Belgium, and that you-know-who tried to pressure the officials to alter the outcome by voiding the suspension of that one star player. I’m glad we lost.”

Another commenter admitted they were pleased the U.S. Men’s National Team was defeated. They noted an inability to support a team that benefitted after the intervention.

“Sad I am to admit it, but I’m glad the [U.S. Men’s National Team] lost to Belgium. I could never have supported a U.S. Team that gained victory after Trump played the Refs and attempted to rig the outcome.”

Some social media users also highlighted the irony of the situation. “I am glad for [Belgium]; Trump put his thumb on the scale and still lost us the game,” one user wrote, indicating that they viewed the loss as a form of justice.

The involvement of Trump in the review process sparked backlash among critics who felt his actions inappropriately politicized the sport. Notable figures like film director Morgan J. Freeman voiced their disapproval, with Freeman stating he would not support a U.S. team that engaged in what he perceived as cheating.

Prior to the match, several individuals publicly declared their intention to root against the American team. Following the loss, the U.S. soccer team will now have to wait four years for another chance at World Cup redemption.
