An internal review by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has uncovered several policy violations and staff missteps following the death of Chaofeng Ge at a detention center managed by the Geo Group. Ge, a 32-year-old Chinese immigrant, was found deceased at the facility in Pennsylvania.
Ge had previously attempted suicide and was on prescribed antidepressants. However, during his arrival at the detention center on July 31, 2025, his medical records from a prior incarceration were not available due to being misplaced. This led to a nurse conducting his intake screening without knowledge of his mental health history or his use of antidepressant medication.
This incident highlights significant gaps in the handling of detainees’ medical information, raising concerns about the procedures in place at immigration detention facilities. The oversight and loss of critical medical data have sparked debates on the responsibilities and operational practices of such managed centers.
