Indiana Hoosiers Dominate Michigan as Football Powerhouse

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Indiana Hoosiers have turned the tables on Michigan’s long-standing football dominance. Under coach Curt Cignetti, the sixth-ranked Hoosiers have established themselves as a formidable program. They have achieved success by implementing a balanced offense and a defense focused on winning turnover margins. Their efforts culminated in a national championship win.

Comparatively, Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham acknowledges the Hoosiers’ approach. “They’re doing it exactly how we want to do it,” Whittingham said. Historically, Michigan has been the winningest program in college football, holding an 85% win rate against Indiana, their best against any Big Ten team. However, Indiana, historically burdened with losses, claimed their first national title last November.

Notably, Michigan had dominated the series against Indiana, winning 42 of the last 45 meetings. They also boast a home-game winning streak of 22 games dating back nearly six decades. On Saturday, the Hoosiers, with a record of 6-1 (3-1 Big Ten), are favored by seven points over Michigan, who stands at 4-2 (1-2).

Quarterback Situation at Michigan

Amid an uncertain quarterback scenario, Tommy Carr emerged as a promising player. He led Michigan to a 21-18 victory against Penn State, showcasing capabilities that impressed the coaching staff. Carr’s performance earned him consideration for his first career start against Indiana.

Carr’s football lineage is noteworthy. His grandfathers are Lloyd Carr, who led Michigan to a 1997 national title, and Tom Curtis, a record-holding All-America defensive back for the Wolverines. Additionally, his brother CJ Carr is the starting quarterback for No. 4 Notre Dame.

Indiana’s Winning Formula

Since Cignetti’s tenure began, Indiana has been consistent, avoiding consecutive losses. The team’s strategy prioritizes turnover margins, achieving an even or positive margin in 31 straight games. This streak is the longest in major college football since at least 1995.

Whittingham attributes Indiana’s recent success to this commitment. “That’s a big reason why they’ve won more games in the last two and a half years than anyone in the country,” he noted.

Challenges for Michigan

Michigan faced internal challenges, such as tight end Zack Marshall’s absence from the Penn State game. His criticism of the offensive scheme leaked on social media, leading to disciplinary action. Despite his public apology, Marshall’s absence is notable in light of Michigan’s struggle, having scored a Big Ten-low of 136 points.

Indiana’s Streak Breaks Against Ohio State

Indiana experienced a narrow loss to then-No. 4 Ohio State, ending a 22-game winning streak that began with a 2024 playoff game against Notre Dame. Their prior regular-season loss was also to the Buckeyes, but Indiana responded with a record-setting 66-0 victory over Purdue later that season.
