Novak Djokovic experienced an unexpected interruption during his French Open match against Brazilian Joao Fonseca. A cameraman drew the tennis star’s ire by moving too close during a break on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Paris.
Footage of the incident circulated widely. It showed Djokovic responding sharply. After winning his second consecutive set against the 19-year-old Fonseca, 6-4, Djokovic noticed the cameraman closing in.
“Can you come more in my face?” Djokovic exclaimed sarcastically. “For God’s sake, make some space.”
He raised his hands in frustration, prompting the cameraman to retreat. Even a TNT Sports commentator, Nick Mullins, mentioned that an assistant referee intervened to address the situation. Mullins noted, “That cameraman has now been substituted. There’s a new one there.”
Despite this moment of tension, the match continued without further disturbances. Djokovic aimed to secure his place in the Round of 16 with one more set win. However, the legendary player’s journey took an unexpected turn.
Fonseca, ranked 28th globally, mounted an impressive comeback. He won the next three sets, ending Djokovic’s pursuit with scores of 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 7-5. Despite Djokovic’s experience and being ranked third at age 39, Fonseca showcased his potential as a rising star.
This match marked their first encounter. Fonseca’s victory was significant, further highlighting the young player’s promising future. Moving forward, Fonseca will challenge Norwegian Casper Ruud, ranked No. 15, aiming for a spot in the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros.
