Navigating Annual Family Vacations: Duty or Delight?

Navigating Annual Family Vacations: Duty or Delight?

Many families find extended-family vacations useful for getting extra help with young children. Yet, for some, these trips can become burdensome rather than restful.

Dear Carolyn, my experience with family vacations has been challenging. My parents contribute some help, but they avoid tasks like cooking, cleaning, or managing bedtimes. They expect my husband and me to engage fully in all family activities.

The dynamic between my parents is often negative, creating tension for everyone present. As a result, these vacations feel more like obligations than enjoyable getaways. Meanwhile, my brother sidesteps these trips by citing his kids’ sports commitments over the summer.

Family vacations are meant to strengthen bonds and provide a break from daily routines. However, when trips become more stressful than relaxing, it might be time to consider alternative arrangements. Communicating openly with family about intentions and comfort levels can lead to more peaceful vacations for all.
