Outcry Over Dog’s Shooting by Los Angeles Police Officer

The recent shooting of a dog by a Los Angeles Police Department officer has triggered widespread international controversy. The incident, which occurred last Saturday, has led to public scrutiny over police use of force.

Jameson, a 2-year-old golden saint berdoodle, was fatally shot by police outside an apartment. Officers were there responding to reports of a woman screaming, according to the police department. Later, it was revealed that the woman, Marie Marseille, was celebrating the New York Knicks’ N.B.A. championship victory.

The police released body camera footage on Friday, showing the events leading to the incident. The footage presents combined videos from the body cameras of two officers, approaching the apartment. They had been alerted by a neighbor who heard repeated cries of “Oh, my god” for 20 minutes, prompting a wellness check, as noted in a 911 call recording included in the video.

In the footage, the officers are seen standing on either side of the door, knocking and announcing themselves as police. The timestamp indicates the time as nearly 9 p.m. A woman, whose identity remains undisclosed in the video, opens the door with a barking gray dog wearing a blue shirt at her side. The officers, with their faces blurred, request her to secure the dog. At that moment, one officer unholsters his handgun.
