The New York Giants boast one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. Second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart and running back Cam Skattebo lead the offense along with Malik Nabers, the team’s first-round draft pick in 2024. On defense, emerging talents like Arvell Reese and Abdul Carter join Kayvon Thibodeaux and All-Pro Brian Burns to make up a formidable lineup.
In a surprising move, the Giants have waived their longest-tenured player, wide receiver Darius Slayton, ahead of the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. Slayton, a reliable contributor over his seven-year tenure, was released on Monday. Despite no longer being a central figure, he managed 37 receptions for 538 yards and a touchdown last season, averaging 14.5 yards per catch, making him the second-highest in receiving yards on the team.
Fans quickly expressed their shock on social media. Comments included observations such as, “Damn, that’s actually a shocker,” and questions like, “Why right before the season? He could have had time to find a team.”
Darius Slayton’s departure comes amidst an offseason filled with additions. With Nabers returning to health and the arrivals of Darnell Mooney, Malachi Fields from the draft, and Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants’ receiver room grew crowded.
Slayton achieved 4,435 receiving yards and 22 touchdowns via 296 catches during his time in New York, placing him 12th in franchise history for receiving yards and 14th for receptions. Despite his contributions, Slayton experienced a decline in performance and occasional struggles with dropped passes in recent years.
Few expected this decision, especially right before the season kickoff. However, several NFL teams might find Slayton’s skills appealing, and it’s likely he won’t remain a free agent for long. The Raiders, Bengals, and Panthers might be interested given their need for receiver depth. As a Georgia native, Slayton could consider a move to the Falcons or a reunion with Coach Brian Daboll in Tennessee.
