Hundreds of fans gathered in a Welsh seaside village to honor the late singer Bonnie Tyler. Her coffin was brought home, draped in a Welsh flag, for a final farewell. Tyler, loved for her 1983 hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” passed away last month in Portugal at the age of 75.
After emergency intestinal surgery in Faro, where she had a residence, Tyler was hospitalized in May. Supporters from the United Kingdom and beyond lined the streets of Mumbles, near Swansea, to see the hearse. Some fans lingered outside her former home, while others left flowers in tribute.
She was always coming home and making sure she came back to her fans in Wales,” said an 18-year-old fan, Carys Edwards. “Her songs touched many of us here in Wales; we loved her a lot.
Born Gaynor Hopkins, Tyler was a coal miner’s daughter from Skewen, Wales. She was raised with three sisters and two brothers. Over her career, she received three Grammy nominations. In 2013, she represented Britain at the Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II honored Tyler as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her contributions to music.
Tyler’s songs, especially “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” remained popular over the years. They were streamed more than a billion times, especially around solar eclipses in 2017 and 2024. Other well-known hits included “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding Out For a Hero,” from the “Footloose” soundtrack.
A private celebration of Tyler’s life will occur at a church in Swansea on Monday. Her last journey will take her through her hometown of Skewen.
