The Minnesota Vikings quickly named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback, opting for him over J.J. McCarthy, the team’s 2024 first-round pick. Reports suggest that the decision involved more than performance on the practice field.
During last summer, some within the Vikings organization had concerns about McCarthy. After missing his rookie season due to a knee injury, he struggled with consistency in 2025. CBS Sports reported that his unpredictability worried some within the team.

Some voices within the organization even suggested undrafted free agent Max Brosmer could have started in Week 1. However, after watching McCarthy complete 57.6% of his passes with 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions over ten games—while the team went 6-4—the Vikings sought other quarterback options this offseason.
A source mentioned to the outlet that a franchise quarterback should provide stability. McCarthy hasn’t achieved this, leaving people unsure of what to expect from him daily. His youth and inexperience were cited as potential reasons for his inconsistency.
The Vikings acquired Murray, who was the former No. 1 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals. Murray’s tenure with the Cardinals was tumultuous, but the Vikings have chosen to start him as they face the New York Giants for their first preseason game of the 2026 NFL season.
As McCarthy enters Year 3 as a backup, his future remains uncertain. A defensive coach told CBS Sports that while McCarthy has talent, he needs to learn game management and not overextend himself. If he achieves this, the Vikings or another team may consider him for a starting role.

The hiring of a new General Manager, Nolan Teasley, not tied to McCarthy’s selection, also plays a part in McCarthy’s uncertain standing with the team. Furthermore, injuries have hindered McCarthy’s development since his time at Michigan.
The young quarterback’s current sample size is small—only ten games. While his quarterback rating is low among peers with more than 155 pass attempts, there have been flashes of potential. At 23 years old, McCarthy still has time to develop.
However, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell trusts Murray more at this moment. O’Connell has a track record, having revived Sam Darnold’s career during McCarthy’s injury in 2024, leading to a Super Bowl win with the Seattle Seahawks.
Minnesota fans may hope O’Connell can help Murray’s career as well. Until then, McCarthy must continue working and seize future opportunities to prove himself. During a preseason game against the Giants, McCarthy completed 4-of-7 passes for 34 yards with one sack. Meanwhile, Carson Wentz, competing for the backup role behind Murray, completed 6-of-11 passes for 56 yards with a touchdown to Myles Price.
