An individual linked to a violent robbery near an Atlanta transit station was detained on Monday after allegedly stealing a marked police vehicle and colliding with a tanker truck.

The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Phelan Thorpe, was wanted for a robbery that occurred on Saturday afternoon close to the Midtown MARTA station. The Atlanta Police Department charged Thorpe with robbery and simple battery related to this event.
Robbery Details
A report of a wanted man possibly armed led officers to the 2000 block of Thomasville Drive SE shortly after 5:15 p.m. on Monday. Authorities had released surveillance footage showing a man pursuing a woman from the Midtown MARTA station and allegedly attacking her near 10th and West Peachtree streets on October 3, 2026.
Theft of Police Cruiser
Once officers located Thorpe, he allegedly entered a marked Atlanta Police Department vehicle parked nearby and drove away. He then drove the cruiser into Clayton County, where he crashed into a tanker truck on Interstate 675.
Arrest and Aftermath
Thorpe was apprehended following the crash. He suffered minor injuries and was taken to a hospital. No officers or civilians were injured during the incident.
Initial Robbery Incident
Video footage showed a suspect following a woman from the Midtown MARTA station before attacking and robbing her. The suspect allegedly claimed he had a gun and demanded her purse and iPhone, leading to a physical altercation. After striking the woman and taking her phone and driver’s license, the suspect fled.
The victim was hospitalized for evaluation after the robbery.
Ongoing Investigation
