David Spade and Dana Carvey Critique Hollywood’s Emphasis on Race and Gender

Comedians David Spade and Dana Carvey have voiced their opinions on Hollywood’s focus on race and gender distinctions during their Fly on the Wall podcast. They argue for the industry to stop highlighting such differences.

Spade shared his frustration over award shows emphasizing firsts based on race or gender. He believes that removing these distinctions would promote equality, saying, “If you just say we’re all actors…it makes it more even.” Carvey humorously echoed this sentiment by recalling the introduction he received when winning his Emmy as a “straight white male.”

Spade called out the focus on race and gender in Hollywood during a recent podcast episode.

Spade recounted his experience on the NBC show Just Shoot Me, where he was informed whenever a female director was involved. He felt this approach was slightly diminishing, advocating instead for a uniform treatment of directors regardless of gender.

In a March podcast episode, Spade criticized the declining state of Hollywood under the leadership of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. He joked about the bankruptcy of CBS Radford, a location associated with his past work on Just Shoot Me and Seinfeld.

Mayor Bass has championed the entertainment industry because it’s a bedrock of our middle class.

A statement from Mayor Bass’s press office emphasized her support for the industry, noting reductions in filming fees and approval of studio spaces.

Spade and Carvey revisited their concerns in April’s podcast episode with guest Tim Dillon. Spade called for Hollywood to be prioritized by California’s leadership, acknowledging past misunderstandings about his criticisms. He suggested a need to reassess budget priorities to support the industry.

While Spade softened his criticisms, Dillon argued that leaders seem complacent about the current state, highlighting challenges faced by the industry and the departure of people from California.

Lori A. Bashian, an entertainment news writer at Fox News Digital, reported on the comedians’ discussions.
