Naperville North’s Diego Hernandez Shines in Soccer Despite Challenges

Diego Hernandez, a senior midfielder at Naperville North, stands out in soccer for unique reasons. Unlike most of his teammates, Hernandez does not play competitive soccer year-round. Economic circumstances necessitate his involvement in his father Juan’s restaurant. Nevertheless, he brings a diligent mindset to the game.

Coach’s Insight:

Coach Jim Konrad praises Hernandez’s commitment. “Diego is special,” Konrad said. “He isn’t part of the usual club system, but soccer is woven into his family’s culture.” Hernandez’s limited club experience doesn’t deter him. “Not really,” he stated. “My dad trained me at parks from a young age.”

Team Chemistry:

Now, Hernandez focuses on practice with his high school team. “Practicing with my teammates enhances our chemistry,” he explained. They improve together, benefiting the entire team.

Key Performance:

On Saturday, Hernandez demonstrated his potential. He scored a game-tying goal and secured the winning penalty in a shootout. This led the fifth-seeded Huskies to a 3-2 victory over third-seeded Naperville Central in the Class 3A Naperville North Regional championship.

The defending state champions, standing at 12-3-5, now move to face second-seeded Benet in the East Aurora Sectional semifinals.

Path to Success:

Hernandez had been a reserve during the team’s successful 2025 season. “Seeing my team excel inspired me to train harder,” he shared. The motivation paid off, especially against the Redhawks who initially took a 1-0 lead. Naperville Central aimed to make up for a previous 3-0 defeat but faced robust opposition.

Senior Dylan Healy played a crucial role by tying the game. “Seeing the goalie’s position, I struck hard to put topspin on the ball,” Healy explained.

Game Decider:

The Redhawks briefly regained their advantage with Sebastian Martinez’s goal during overtime. Yet, Hernandez responded swiftly, netting a 17-yard shot in the second overtime to level the score.

“I aimed for the shot after spotting an opportunity,” Hernandez recounted. “As a lefty, I cut in and saw my chance.”

Coach’s Praise:

Konrad commended Hernandez’s contributions, highlighting his strategic gameplay. “Diego is a force,” Konrad remarked. “His clever on-ball skills and game understanding make him valuable. While many skilled players overlook defense, he excels in it too.”

Opponents struggle against Hernandez, particularly during set pieces. “He’s reliable,” Konrad noted.

Shootout Details:

During the shootout, Naperville North’s junior goalkeeper Ziden Elganzouri made crucial saves. Hernandez converted a penalty to establish a 3-1 lead, mirroring his performance in the semifinal win over Plainfield East.

Teammate Dylan Healy admires Hernandez’s work ethic. “He’s humble and hard-working, even without much recognition,” Healy said. “What he did tonight proves his contributions.”

Though Hernandez won’t pursue soccer after graduation, he plans to attend trade school and enter the electrical field. “I’m incredibly proud,” Konrad added. “His achievements and future prospects bring joy.”
