Elon Musk Defends Starlink Amidst Criticism Over Ukraine Restrictions

Elon Musk recently defended Starlink’s role in Ukraine, following reports of service restrictions that affected Ukraine’s efforts against Russia. Musk stated that SpaceX has significantly contributed to Ukraine’s defense more than any other private firm, while accusing the country of misusing Starlink in ways contrary to its intended civilian purposes.

Musk explained on X, “Using Starlink, a civilian commercial service, for offensive drone strikes has never been allowed.” He clarified that Starlink’s use for such purposes violates the company’s terms and indicated this loophole had been recently addressed.

He highlighted the distinction between Starlink and Starshield, which is controlled by the U.S. government, letting them decide its usage.

Musk said, “Starlink remains crucial for Ukraine’s defense as it’s the only system not susceptible to jamming or destruction currently.” He added that turning off Starlink would collapse the Ukrainian front line immediately, emphasizing this as a factual statement.

Musk expressed that at the war’s onset, Starlink was vital as it offered undisturbed communication, a feat other systems couldn’t achieve against Russian attacks.

He criticized those advocating for continued conflict without feasible solutions, expressing disdain for their actions.

Concerning service restrictions, Musk attributed the decision to the U.S. military, stating it ultimately fell under the purview of President Trump.

A source revealed to Fox News Digital that Ukraine was unaware of these restrictions, which affected platforms exceeding speeds of 100 mph, adding that they are contracted through the U.S. government until mid-2027.

Musk didn’t specify who among U.S. officials authorized this restriction, while former President Trump mentioned discussing the matter with Musk without further detail.

Despite initial disruptions, Ukraine regained stable access to Starlink, maintaining speeds of 250 mph. Speculation arises about what caused the service slowdown, with accusations aimed at both Trump and Musk. This occurred amid renewed dialogue opportunities for peace between Ukraine and Russia.

U.S. authorities, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, dismissed any government involvement in reducing Ukraine’s Starlink capabilities.

Russia has agreed to return to negotiation discussions involving Washington and Kyiv. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy mentioned the possibility of a truce aligning along current frontlines.

Fox News Digital sought comments from the White House, SpaceX, and relevant U.S. departments, alongside contributions from James Cirrone. Brie Stimson, based in Los Angeles, provided additional reporting.
