U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Democrats conceded Representative Ilhan Omar’s seat due to court documents naming her as Ilhan Nur Said Elmi. Omar has denied this name. Prosecutors referenced the Minnesota Democrat in a federal filing as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” She responded by clarifying, “My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”
In a Fort Myers speech, Trump declared Omar’s seat conceded because of alleged name fraud during her congressional oath. According to him, “The Dumocrat Party has just conceded the seat of the former Ilhan Omar from the lovely country of Somalia.” No official statement from Democrats supports this; Omar retains her congressional seat.
Previously, Trump demanded Omar resign, repeating claims of her marrying her brother, which she denies. He announced at an Iowa rally, “She used a fake name to be sworn in. I assume she must immediately have to resign from Congress.” House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump’s “unhinged personal attacks and baseless accusations.”
During a Florida rally, Trump instructed gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds and Senator Ashley Moody to tell House Speaker Mike Johnson that Democrats surrendered Omar’s seat. He further alleged confusion over Omar’s real name. He said, “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar.”
Omar’s office refuted Trump’s claims, stating, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.” Omar noted on social media that the “pedophile protection party’s president is laundering conspiracy theories.”
Trump has consistently targeted Omar’s Somali heritage. Earlier this month, Homeland Security agents raided Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence. A search warrant was executed related to a federal investigation. Trump denied involvement, while Omar claimed political motivation and linked this to Trump’s frequent attacks and demands for her deportation.
Hakeem Jeffries stated, “After lawlessly sending his violent DHS machine to Congresswoman Omar’s home earlier this month, the President is once again peddling sick propaganda against her at a moment when political violence is surging.”
