The Cleveland Browns have decided to continue with Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback, despite discussions among fans and media suggesting a reassessment following a disappointing start to the season. Head coach Todd Monken confirmed Watson’s role, stating, “I anticipate that Deshaun will be our starter.” The decision comes amid scrutiny after the Browns’ loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Assessment After Loss
Monken reviewed the footage of the 34-10 defeat against the Jaguars and saw reasons to retain Watson. Watson hadn’t played for 693 days prior, and Monken noted, “It’s only been two weeks he’s gotten all the reps.” Watson and Shedeur Sanders had split practice repetitions during training camp.
Monken highlighted positive aspects of Watson’s performance, such as his understanding of certain concepts and moments where he played without hesitation. Despite these positives, Monken acknowledged areas needing improvement, stating, “Wasn’t perfect, of course not. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have scored as few points as we did.” He expressed eagerness to build on Watson’s performance.
Upcoming Challenges
Watson’s continuation as starter comes with the caveat of needing tangible improvement in the upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Former Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, now leading Tampa, presents a reminder of the Browns’ previous choices. Watson’s performance compared to Mayfield will be closely observed by team ownership and could impact future decisions.
Monken commented, “We got to play better around him. We got to call it better.” The looming home opener against the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 adds pressure; Watson has faced criticism from fans and has remarked on the impact of fan reactions on his performance.
This tension was visible during preseason games, where Watson received substantial boos. If Watson doesn’t improve in Tampa, the reception upon returning to the home field may be hostile, pressuring both Watson and the team.
