Cape Verde, a small island nation off the African coast, made headlines with its soccer team’s impressive performance against Spain in the FIFA World Cup. With a population of just over 524,800, the country must have been thrilled by their team’s unexpected result against a top contender.
Spain, favored to win this year’s World Cup, only managed a 0-0 draw with Cape Verde, one of the tournament’s biggest surprises. The match took place on June 15, 2026, in Atlanta.

During the match, Cape Verde’s 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha played a crucial role, thwarting Spain’s efforts in the first half. Despite facing seven shots on goal, Vozinha ensured Spain couldn’t score, preserving the draw. Mikel Oyarzabal took five of those shots, yet none found the net.
Though Lamine Yamal, a notable Spanish player, started from the bench, he too couldn’t secure any goals for Spain. The scoreless match means both teams earn one point in their Group H standings, complicating Spain’s path forward as they awaited the outcome of the Saudi Arabia-Uruguay game that same day.

This World Cup marks Cape Verde’s debut on the global stage. Previously, it was part of Portugal and didn’t become a FIFA member immediately. The nation began its pursuit of World Cup qualification in 2002, finally succeeding this year, as the tournament expanded to 48 teams.
Ranked 67th by FIFA, Cape Verde’s performance against second-ranked Spain reminded many of Spain’s glory in 2010, when they won the tournament in South Africa. However, Spain has only reached the round of 16 in the last two World Cups.
