Brunson Leads Knicks to Victory in NBA Finals Game 1

NBA playoffs often see a noticeable change in game pace. It doesn’t necessarily make the basketball easier, but each moment is laden with tension. Teams and players face intense pressure to execute crucial plays during these moments.

Brunson Shines in Game 1

On Wednesday, Jalen Brunson of the New York Knicks emerged as the key player in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Brunson scored 13 points in the fourth quarter, propelling the Knicks to a 105-95 win against the San Antonio Spurs. This victory gave the Knicks a 1-0 lead in the series. In contrast, the Spurs managed only 19 points in the final quarter and appeared disorganized.

Brunson’s Playoff Performance

Brunson excels in playoff situations where the Knicks need to score. During the 2023 postseason, Brunson has been unmatched in clutch situations, defined as a game within five points in the last five minutes. Only 14.8% of his clutch field goals have been assisted, the lowest among players with 100 clutch attempts. This demonstrates Brunson’s ability to create and score independently.

“In the biggest moments, he shows up, and that’s what MVPs are supposed to do,” said Knicks head coach Mike Brown.

Spurs coach Mitch Johnson praised Brunson’s skills and ability to pick the right moments to score.

Brunson’s Resilience and Confidence

Despite challenges, Brunson displayed resilience. In the first quarter, he left briefly due to a right knee issue. Later, an ankle injury seemed to hamper him. By the third quarter’s end, he had completed just seven of 22 shots. However, he rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter, concluding with 30 points.

“I think it starts with my confidence. It comes with my work ethic,” Brunson explained, emphasizing team trust as crucial in stressful environments.

Spurs’ Struggle to Respond

While Brunson thrived, the Spurs faced difficulty. San Antonio managed only 40 points in the second half, with a lackluster fourth quarter performance.

Although Victor Wembanyama had a prominent scoring run briefly, he shot just 3-of-8 in the fourth and had two turnovers. The Knicks, however, maintained ball control, with no turnovers in the final quarter. Meanwhile, De’Aaron Fox’s attempts to stabilize the team fell short as he missed two shots and turned over the ball twice.

Clutch Time Challenges

In single-game scenarios, random fluctuations can impact outcomes. Despite this Game 1 loss, the Spurs’ shortcomings in clutch moments have been evident throughout their postseason. Their offensive rating in these moments now stands at 96.8. Conversely, New York has achieved a 107.7 offensive rating in clutch situations, with a net rating of 18.5 in the playoffs.

Ultimately, Brunson consistently generated scoring opportunities while the Spurs faltered. Brown concluded, “He was the MVP in the second half. … He did what MVP candidates are supposed to do. He carried us home.”
