The New York Knicks secured a crucial victory in the opening game of the NBA Finals, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 105-95. This win gives the Knicks a 1-0 series lead and extends their postseason winning streak to 12 games. This ties them with the 1999 Spurs for the second-longest such streak in history. Only the 2017 Warriors won more, with 15 consecutive playoff victories.
Jalen Brunson, the biggest star of the night, delivered an exceptional performance, rising to the occasion against the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama. Though he faced a brief scare with a leg injury early in the game, Brunson returned to lead his team with 30 points and dominated in the fourth quarter.
During the third quarter, the Knicks trailed by 13 points but managed to stay composed and make a strong comeback. Brunson, despite facing several hard knocks, showed no signs of his previous injury as he relentlessly attacked San Antonio’s defense.
The Spurs heavily relied on their three-point shooting but struggled, making only 11 of 43 attempts. Wembanyama, while effective defensively, had limited impact on other fronts, still managing to lead his team with 26 points.
“Wasn’t really my night most of the night. But we just kept chipping away. Kept finding a way,” Brunson said. “Our chemistry, knowing that we have each other’s backs, helped us come back from the deficit.”
New York had strong support from Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby, who together added 35 points. The Knicks’ bench also played a vital role, with José Alvarado, Landry Shamet, and Miles McBride contributing important minutes and points.
On the Spurs’ side, De’Aaron Fox had a quiet game with only seven points, making it challenging for San Antonio to keep up with New York’s relentless pace.
As the Knicks move forward with a lead in the Finals, New York City gears up for more basketball excitement. Game 2 promises to continue the drama and intensity.
