Recently released body camera footage captures a dramatic encounter involving an alleged carjacking suspect in Maryland. The suspect, identified as Jasmin L. Cooper, 28, was seen driving toward police officers, hitting an officer and multiple vehicles before officers discharged their firearms.
On May 7 at around 9 p.m., Anne Arundel County Police responded to a hit-and-run report near North Crain Highway and 11th Avenue in Glen Burnie. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a woman had collided with another car before forcibly taking a family member’s vehicle who had come to assist her.
Cooper was later located in the vehicle on the 8500 block of Severn. The body camera footage shows officers aiming their weapons at Cooper and commanding her to shut off the car and exit. Despite raising her hands at one point, she did not comply with the instructions.
“So what, she stole her son’s car?” an officer is heard saying in the video.
Cooper then sped away from the parking spot, narrowly missing officers moving aside. Officers reported that during her attempt to flee, she struck an officer, two patrol cars, and another vehicle. In response, police opened fire, injuring her.
Additional officers saw Cooper drive onto Reece Road, where she crashed into another vehicle. She then attempted to break into an occupied vehicle but was apprehended by officers. Footage shows her on the ground in handcuffs with officers tending to her gunshot wound.
Jasmin L. Cooper faces several charges, including carjacking, attempted carjacking, multiple counts of reckless endangerment, and first- and second-degree assault. Both Cooper and the officer who was hit received treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
