Thea Frodin’s Journey from Film to U.S. Open Tennis

New York — Thea Frodin, a 17-year-old tennis player, faces a significant challenge in her first U.S. Open singles match against the No. 2 player in women’s tennis. Frodin is known for hitting the ball with a style reminiscent of Serena Williams, a skill honed while portraying Williams as a body double for actor Demi Singleton in the 2021 film “King Richard.”

Frodin’s opportunity to participate in the U.S. Open results from winning the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 18s National Championships. Her performance in tournament tennis has earned her a wild card entry and brought her into the movie industry.

During her youth tennis career in California, she excelled in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles sectional titles. Her skills caught attention, leading to an audition where she became Singleton’s on-court body double in the movie. Frodin reflects on her time on set, mingling with actors including Will Smith, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Richard Williams.

The experience was invaluable, influencing Frodin’s technique. She imitated Serena Williams’ moves so well that it affected her own playing style, as noted by her parents.

Despite participating in the U.S. Open doubles last year, Frodin has yet to meet Serena or Venus Williams. Her upcoming match against Elena Rybakina marks her first WTA Tour level competition. Though she attempted to qualify earlier this year in Miami, she missed the main draw.

Frodin is completing her final year of high school. Her future plans are uncertain, but she remains open to pursuing opportunities in Hollywood.

“Tennis has always been my main focus,” Frodin shared. “But I’m intrigued by the possibility of balancing both tennis and acting. I enjoyed the acting world immensely and would consider it as a side pursuit.”
