Folarin Balogun’s Participation in Round of 16 Faces Uncertainty

Uncertainty surrounds the participation of USMNT striker Folarin Balogun in the Round of 16 against Belgium following a red card during their 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina. The incident occurred when Balogun stepped on defender Tarik Muharemovic’s ankle in the 64th minute, leaving the team to play with 10 men for nearly 36 minutes.

The USMNT could not appeal the red card, and FIFA announced that Balogun, the team’s top scorer at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, would serve a one-game suspension. However, on Sunday, FIFA reversed its decision, suspending Balogun’s red card for one year, allowing him to play against Belgium.

“Drama immediately ensued on social media and around the world.”

Despite the reprieve, controversy erupted as UEFA expressed dissatisfaction with FIFA’s decision. In response, FIFA allowed Belgium to appeal the suspension. Adam Crafton of The Athletic reported that both Belgium and U.S. Soccer were required to submit their appeals by 5 a.m. PST.

This situation leaves the possibility of the red card being reinstated shortly before the match. The process by which Belgium can appeal, while the USMNT cannot, has raised questions about FIFA’s rules.

With the match approaching, both teams face uncertainty, unable to finalize their plans not knowing if Balogun will play. The confusion reflects broader issues with FIFA’s decision-making processes.
