President Trump Advocates for Folarin Balogun’s Return to U.S. Soccer Match

President Donald Trump confirmed his request to FIFA regarding the red card suspension of U.S. soccer player Folarin Balogun. Following Trump’s appeal, FIFA reversed the decision, allowing Balogun to play in Monday night’s match against Belgium.

During an Oval Office event, Trump stated, “I asked for a review by FIFA,” while emphasizing he had “nothing to do with the decision.” The reversal stirred the sporting world as the U.S. team geared up for the match against Belgium. Initially, Balogun was banned due to a red card received in a match against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Trump discussed his exchange with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, labeling him “highly respected.” Trump, claiming an understanding of sports, disagreed with the referee’s decision, describing the incident as two skilled athletes entangling, not committing a flagrant foul. “That was not a guy punching somebody in the face,” he said, criticizing the proposed ban for the forthcoming match.

The conversation between Trump and Infantino, witnessed by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, who was present at the game, initiated action amidst rare appeals processes. Known individuals emphasized strategic discussions involving the federal government aiding the U.S. soccer legal team in forming an appeal argument.

The FIFA White House Task Force Head, Andrew Giuliani, informed Trump of the incident. Trump sought to understand the suspension and red card grant, per a U.S. official. “The U.S. government provided additional evidence that was used in the appeal process,” the official noted. The appeal was managed by an independent board, leading to what the official called the “correct and proper outcome.”

In response, the Royal Belgian Football Association challenged Balogun’s eligibility, pledging to advocate for ethical principles and fair competition’s interests regardless of the match’s outcome.
