With California’s gas prices exceeding the national average, electric vehicle (EV) incentives are returning to the state. Governor Gavin Newsom has allocated $135 million in the final state budget to encourage residents to purchase new and used EVs. The initiative follows the expiration of a $7,500 federal tax incentive on new EVs and $4,000 on used EVs.
New EV Incentives
This revived effort involves instant rebates, providing $3,500 off new EVs and $1,750 off used ones. Unlike the previous federal tax credits, these are applied immediately and do not require a deferred application for credit. However, they apply only to first-time EV buyers, verified by a buyer attestation.
The Push for Used EVs
Despite a decrease in gas prices, they remain higher than the average nationwide, motivating drivers to seek cost-effective options. Used EV sales defied trends, increasing by over 20% in the first quarter of 2026, as their prices become more competitive with new and used traditional cars.
An Affordable EV Truck
For those considering a new EV, Slate Auto plans to release a truck priced under $25,000. This customizable vehicle allows buyers to pay only for desired features, with delivery expected later this year. Buyers can transform the truck into a basic SUV style, compatible with Tesla chargers, offering a range of 205 miles.
Weather and Other Highs
A heat wave is hitting Los Angeles County, with elevated temperatures expected this week. Scientists are also raising concerns about new temperature records due to a developing El Niño.
Federal Student Loan Limits
New federal regulations now cap graduate-student loans at $20,500 annually, limiting borrowing for tuition and expenses.
California Court Transcripts
The California Supreme Court is deliberating on whether electronic recordings can be used in certain civil court proceedings, a decision that could address a systemic crisis.
