NFL teams have completed their organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamps. After a month-long pause, action will resume in late July with the start of training camps.
The preseason kicks off with the Carolina Panthers facing the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, Aug. 6 during the Hall of Fame Game, broadcasted by NBC. Additional preseason games in the first week will occur from Aug. 13-15. Week 2 follows on Aug. 20-23, with Week 3 rounding off the preseason on Aug. 27-29.
Before preseason activities begin, teams will assemble for training camps. While the Los Angeles Chargers haven’t specified their camp date, a major position battle looms this summer.
Position Battle: Left Guard
The competition at left guard for the Chargers includes Trevor Penning, Kayode Awosika, and Jake Slaughter. This opening comes after Zion Johnson’s departure, a key player drafted in the first round in 2022. Johnson was crucial last season, playing 1,130 snaps and allowing 29 pressures, 17 hurries, and five sacks.
To fill Johnson’s shoes, the Chargers can choose from two seasoned veterans and one promising rookie.
Trevor Penning: At 27, Penning is seen as the likely frontrunner. He has 33 NFL starts and has played across the offensive line. His experience includes 1,081 snaps at right tackle, 511 at left tackle, 358 at left guard, and 90 at right guard.
Kayode Awosika: Despite less starting time, Awosika has significant experience at the guard position. Over five seasons, split between the Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles, he has amassed 615 snaps at left guard and 358 at right guard.
Jake Slaughter: Drafted in the second round of 2026, Slaughter is the less predictable candidate. Having played his college career entirely at center (2,142 snaps), the Chargers see potential in him transitioning to guard. Though third in line, he might earn playing time as a rookie.
