Vice President JD Vance Discusses Iran Deal and Criticism from Israeli Officials

Vice President JD Vance discussed criticism from pro-Israel factions regarding the U.S. deal with Iran in an interview with The New York Times. He expressed that Israel can’t ‘kill’ its way out of all national security issues.

Speaking with Ross Douthat, Vance addressed concerns from Israeli figures such as Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. He questioned their proposals for solving Israel’s security problems as a nation of 9 million people.

The U.S. and Iran have a new Memorandum of Understanding. It aims to re-open the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran’s nuclear program. Critics compare the deal to the Obama-era agreement, claiming it grants Iran economic concessions before imposing permanent restrictions. Supporters argue the deal is necessary to prevent a broader Middle East conflict and a global economic shock.

Douthat raised the point that the deal is unpopular in Israel. He asked if there’s a misalignment between U.S. and Israeli interests. Vance acknowledged the sensitivity of the Israeli population towards the deal, noting what he believes is misinformation causing panic. He stated the deal benefits the entire region, including Israel.

Vance clarified that U.S. interests, particularly those of the American people, are paramount. He agreed that the President has expressed willingness to diverge from Israeli political goals if they don’t align with American interests.

Ben-Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, recently emphasized Israel’s commitment to protect its citizens and soldiers, stating harsh measures may be necessary despite U.S. opinions.

Vance used these discussions to caution Israeli officials against drawing animosity from the U.S., a vital ally, especially in Vice President Vance’s view. He reminded them of the American role in protecting Israel through missile defense programs and the current negotiations with Iran.

Asked about concerns from hawkish figures like Sen. Ted Cruz regarding the Iran deal, Vance stressed solving tangible issues rather than abstract ones. He challenged critics to present viable alternatives to the current strategy.
