Xavier Becerra, who was largely overlooked in the California governor campaign until recently, will progress to the November election following his top-two finish in this week’s primary. The Associated Press confirmed this on Friday.
Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host and Republican, and Tom Steyer, a former hedge fund manager and Democrat, are still competing closely for the second spot as officials tally the votes. California’s nonpartisan primary allows the top two finishers, regardless of party, to move on to the November election.
Becerra’s success in the primary marks his significant turnaround in a hectic race, potentially setting him up to become California’s first Latino governor in the modern era, if he triumphs in November. Voters noted his extensive background in government distinguished him from less experienced candidates.
Hilton led in the initial returns this week, owing to early Republican voting. However, many Democrats deferred their decision until the final week, wanting to see how the race would develop.
The race was decided on Friday when Becerra overtook Hilton to lead the returns. It’s uncertain whether Hilton can maintain his position against Steyer, who has gained momentum since Election Day but might still be trailing.
If Becerra faces Hilton in the general election, he would likely be the favorite. No Republican has won a statewide office in California since 2006. Additionally, Hilton’s endorsement from President Trump, who is unpopular in California, could further impede him.
