A 66-year-old great-grandmother was tragically killed in an unprovoked stabbing on an Atlanta train. This incident led to federal charges against John Elijah Matthews. The victim’s family is expressing profound grief and demanding answers about transit security.
Bruce Levell, a former MARTA operations chairman, raised concerns about safety issues on Atlanta’s busy transit system. He discussed the challenges posed by homeless individuals seeking shelter on the trains.
Following these events, the Trump administration initiated a federal investigation into Atlanta’s transit system. The investigation aims to address the alarming rates of violent incidents. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced that the Federal Transit Administration will audit the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) for worker and rider safety.
Duffy stated, “I want answers from Atlanta. The number of assaults, robberies, and rapes on MARTA’s trains is more than three times the national average.” This statement came after the murder of Margaret Swan, who was allegedly killed by a homeless man on the train.
John Elijah Matthews is now facing a federal charge for committing an act of violence that caused death on a mass transportation system. “Margaret’s family deserves accountability. No one should be forced to fear for their safety on public transit,” Duffy emphasized.
The audit will evaluate whether MARTA has correctly implemented its safety plan. This includes measures to prevent assaults on transit workers and passengers. It will also scrutinize MARTA’s strategies to reduce crime and fare evasion. Duffy gave MARTA 15 days to provide safety plans, assault reports, and other documents to investigators.
The investigation follows two stabbing incidents on MARTA property. One resulted in Swan’s death, while another occurred days earlier at a station. Matthews faces additional charges, including felony murder, locally.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche might seek the death penalty if Matthews is convicted. Surveillance footage captured the unprovoked attack on the train. Matthews allegedly stabbed Swan multiple times without any prior interaction.
Passengers fled the scene and called for help. MARTA police officers apprehended Matthews at the Oakland City Station. He was reportedly carrying a bloody folding knife, and blood stains were on his clothes. First responders attempted aid, but Swan was pronounced dead at the scene. The Fulton County Medical Examiner documented her time of death as 2 p.m.
