A discussion unfolded on CNN’s “Table for Five” regarding the substantial costs attached to President Donald Trump’s renovation projects in Washington, D.C. These include the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, with a price tag of $13 million. Host Abby Phillips raised concerns over these expenses, noting the ongoing work on other landmarks such as the White House East Wing and the statues around the Lincoln Memorial.
During the renovations, a blue protective coating is being applied to the Reflecting Pool. Some argue this spending comes at a time when federal employees face cuts amid claims of tightening budgets.
New York Post columnist Lydia Moynihan defended the renovations, comparing them to former President Barack Obama’s $35 million efforts in the capital. Moynihan emphasized the importance of prioritizing Washington’s safety and aesthetics amid broader governmental expenses.
“These are pennies when you consider what Democrats are proposing spending trillions of dollars on,” Moynihan stated.
The discussion escalated when journalist Touré brought up the contrast between renovation spending and unmet needs like childcare, high gas prices, and the financial burden of ongoing conflicts.
“We are at war, with a struggling economy. Why would we prioritize this spending?” questioned Touré. Moynihan countered that dismissing infrastructure repairs due to costs is impractical.
CNN’s panel further debated financial priorities, including whether defense spending could be redirected to other areas like health insurance.
Former Michigan Rep. Peter Meijer acknowledged the importance of maintaining national landmarks for significant anniversaries, while journalist John Avlon mentioned the unfinished state of other projects, such as the White House East Wing.
