In a thrilling conclusion to the American League wild-card series, the Chicago White Sox overcame the Houston Astros in Game 2 to secure their place in the American League Division Series. The game took place at Daikin Park, where 36,015 fans gathered to witness the competition.
Initially, the White Sox took charge, scoring four runs in the first inning. It started with Sam Antonacci’s double, followed by Kyle Teel’s sharp single that brought Antonacci home. Next, Miguel Vargas reached base after a fielding error by Nick Allen. Although Munetaka Murakami struck out, Andrew Benintendi’s single to center added another two runs, creating a 3-0 lead.
Tristan Peters continued the momentum with an RBI single that brought Benintendi home, pushing the score to 4-0 and forcing Astros starter Hunter Brown out of the game. Brown allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking one in two-thirds of an inning.
The Astros began their comeback with Jeremy Peña’s solo home run in the first, followed by Cam Smith’s homer in the second, narrowing the gap to 4-2. Jose Altuve’s home run in the fourth brought the score to 4-3.
White Sox starter Sean Burke managed through four innings, conceding three runs on four hits, while striking out five with no walks. Despite Houston closing in, relief pitcher Anthony Kay prevented further damage by retiring two dangerous hitters. He induced Yordan Alvarez to line out to left and walked Isaac Paredes, loading the bases for Altuve, who lined out to right.
With the score at 4-3 in the fifth inning, Benintendi’s walk broke the White Sox’s cold spell at the plate. Tristan Peters walked as well, leading to Bryan Abreu replacing Peter Lambert. Chase Meidroth then capitalized with a three-run homer, extending the lead to 7-3.
This victory marked the White Sox’s first postseason series win since the 2005 World Series. They will now face the Cleveland Guardians in the Division Series starting Saturday at Progressive Field.
