A Democratic candidate in Washington state is experiencing backlash from her own party due to remarks concerning LGBTQ+ rights. Melissa Chaudhry, who aims to unseat Rep. Adam Smith in Washington’s 9th Congressional District, reportedly omitted LGBTQ+ rights from her campaign website. She attributed this to concerns about alienating Muslim voters, according to sources.
The issue came to light when The Stranger reported on her comments made during an endorsement interview. This prompted several Democratic organizations to reconsider their endorsements of Chaudhry. The Washington State Stonewall Democrats criticized her decision, with their chair, Andrew Ashiofu, expressing concerns over her choice to conceal her stance on LGBTQ+ issues while seeking Democratic endorsements.
“Her comments are disqualifying because they reveal a deliberate choice to hide her positions on LGBTQ+ rights,” Ashiofu told Fox News Digital. He insisted that Democratic candidates should openly support LGBTQ+ rights as a fundamental party value.
“Transparency and trust are foundational,”Ashiofu said, urging groups to revisit their endorsements due to Chaudhry’s admitted position concealment impacting confidence in endorsed candidates.
Further controversy arose when The Stranger reported Chaudhry’s intention to switch from the Democratic Party to the Green Party if elected to Congress, requesting that this information remain confidential. This prompted some local Democrats to consider bylaw changes since current rules prohibit rescinding endorsements once given.
Conservative commentator Jason Rantz opined on the situation, stating, “Democrats built their coalition on the promise that every marginalized identity group wins simultaneously, and Melissa Chaudhry just proved the pandering doesn’t always work.”
In response, Chaudhry defended her history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights on social media, emphasizing her lifelong commitment to equality and mentioning personal connections to the LGBTQ+ community. She also accused the media of misrepresenting her statements and described the endorsement interview atmosphere as hostile.
While facing criticism, Chaudhry’s campaign has yet to respond publicly to media requests for further comment. Her primary challenger, Rep. Adam Smith, has held his congressional seat since 1997.
