Victor Wembanyama has emerged as a leading figure in the NBA. The San Antonio Spurs forward has made significant strides in his third season. Despite his strong performance, the Spurs fell to the New York Knicks in the Finals, losing the series in five games. During this season, Wembanyama received accolades like the Defensive Player of the Year award and an All-NBA selection.
Wembanyama faced immense pressure as the Spurs entered the 2026-27 season. The 7-foot-4 player was widely regarded as a potential MVP, and expectations for a championship run were high. However, his public perception took a hit during the postseason. While once celebrated, some began to label him as a villain.

Several incidents on the court contributed to his changing image. One notable event occurred in the Western Conference semifinals. Wembanyama’s elbow made contact with Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves. His defensive efforts against Jalen Brunson in the Finals further fueled criticism from Knicks fans.
Despite these challenges, Wembanyama has maintained composure. In an interview with “60 Minutes,” he stated that he does not let criticism affect him during crucial games. He acknowledged learning from the previous season about finding balance in his competitive edge.
“It showed my limits more than anything else. Going out there, you need to play basketball. You don’t need to beat the s— out of people,” Wembanyama reflected while discussing his learning experiences.
Wembanyama also caught public attention with his behavior before some Finals games. He stood with arms crossed during the national anthem before Game 1 but was absent for subsequent anthem presentations. He has not provided clarity on this choice.
Currently, Wembanyama participates in all five of San Antonio’s regular-season games, impressing with an average of 25 points per game. The Spurs will host the Timberwolves in their upcoming game. Chantz Martin provides ongoing sports coverage for Fox News Digital.
