The University of Washington has canceled a lecture featuring progressive Twitch commentator Hasan Piker. School officials cited issues in the planning process as the reason.
Piker, known for his far-left views, was scheduled to speak in January as a part of the university’s 2026-27 Speaker Series. However, the university released a statement explaining that the event’s organization did not meet the required standards for University-hosted events.

The event’s cancellation has attracted criticism from First Amendment advocates. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression (FIRE) condemned the university’s decision. They urged transparency if the decision was process-based rather than a reaction to public backlash.
Public universities can set standards for events, but they can’t use those standards as a cover for canceling a speaker because of their views.
Piker has a history of controversial remarks. He previously stated America “deserved 9/11” and later called the remark “inappropriate.” His comments have led to criticism from various figures, including Democratic strategist James Carville.
