President Donald Trump has faced criticism for sharing a meme with an AI-generated mugshot of former President Barack Obama. The image, posted on Trump’s social media platform, shows Obama holding an arrest placard with the name “Barack Hussein Obama.” It is part of a Brady Bunch-style grid featuring other figures like former FBI Director James Comey, under a title card labeled “The Shady Bunch.”
In his post, Trump remarked, “This is a bad (Sick!) group of people. Very destructive to our great Nation. Caused tremendous damage through Weaponization! President DJT.” The post received approximately 25,000 likes and over 8,000 shares but drew mixed reactions elsewhere.
Why It Matters
Trump has continuously supported or spread ideas about Obama being arrested on social media. Recently, he shared another post alleging Democratic election interference with a suggestion to “Arrest them all…But first Barack Obama.” Additionally, Trump has posted other AI-generated content, like a video last year depicting Obama being arrested in the Oval Office and later in a jail cell.
These posts are linked to Trump’s “Obamagate” claims, alleging improper investigations or spying on his 2016 campaign by Obama-era officials. Despite Trump calling it the “biggest political crime in American history,” investigations have not found evidence of Obama ordering illegal surveillance or directing the probe.
Critics worry that Trump’s sharing of such posts spreads misinformation and blurs the line between reality and fiction by showing fabricated scenes of a former president getting arrested. An Emerson College poll in 2025 revealed that 47% of Americans trust information from the Trump administration, and 46% trust social media, adding weight to these concerns. However, Trump’s supporters claim these posts are political satire, emphasizing Trump’s longstanding allegations of wrongdoing by Obama’s administration.
Trump’s AI Controversy
Trump’s use of AI-generated content has faced controversy before. In February, he was criticized after sharing an AI-styled video depicting Obama with imagery considered racist, portraying him as a monkey. The post received backlash, with accusations of promoting harmful stereotypes. In April, Trump shared an AI-generated image on Truth Social showing himself as a Jesus-like figure healing a sick man. Religious leaders and political figures condemned the post, and although it was deleted, Trump stated it was intended to depict him as a doctor. These instances have amplified concerns about Trump’s endorsement and use of AI-modified media.
What To Know
The decision to share Obama’s mugshot in “The Shady Bunch” post drew criticism. Melanie D’Arrigo, a Democrat and Executive Director for the Campaign for New York Health, tweeted: “Trump has an actual official mugshot and convictions—none of these people do.” Another user commented with Trump’s own mugshot, noting the irony of posting AI-generated images when he has a real one.
Author Jennifer Erin Valent criticized: “He has debased our nation on every level. Frivolous games with our country will eventually leave us without one.” Podcaster Jim Stewartson also condemned the post, stating: “Look, Donald Trump spends hours brainwashing himself on his website built on an alternate reality mostly by QAnon. He’s truly a member of his own cult. He cannot distinguish between the Qniverse and the real world.” Rosalind Garcia, who attended a recent protest march, added: “He is such an insecure baby boy. Also, this is more proof of vindictive prosecution.”
Newsweek has contacted the White House for comment.
